Northern Territory

Northern Territory, Australia

Northern Territory is one of the federal divisions of Australia, one of its largest in terms of size yet it is also the least populated.

Its most recognized natural landmark is the Uluru or Ayers Rock, a major tourist attraction that draws numerous tourists from all over the country and the world the whole year through. Read more...

The Northern Territory also boasts of several national parks and reserves within its borders. The Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve is located near Wauchope. Its major attraction is the group of rounded boulders located in a sacred Aboriginal site. Made of granite, these boulders are called Karlu Karlu by the Aboriginal people.

The Howard Springs National Park is located south of Darwin and is ideal for bird watching, swimming, and bush walking.

Then there's the Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that supports a wide diversity of flora and fauna. Attractions include several waterfalls, rock gorges, and Aboriginal rock art.

Holiday makers who visit the Northern Territory with their families will find a lot of suitable destinations. There's the Alice Springs Reptile Centre located along Stuart Terrace that boasts of an extensive display of reptiles from all over the country.

A visit to the Crocodylus Park in Berrimah will yield hours of animal viewing, with the facility housing some of the largest reptile specimen in the world.

The biggest attraction at Aquascene, along Doctors Gully Road in Darwin, is fish feeding. For a few hours each day, trays of bread are dispensed for those who wish to hand feed large fishes that come to shore with the tide.

There are also several historic structures and buildings located within the Northern Territory that serve as silent reminders of the days gone past. The Fannie Bay Gaol was established in 1883 and remained functional until 1979. Tours are provided to those interested in looking at the facilities used by prisoners since the olden times.

Another notable structure is the Springvale Homestead in Katherine. Built in 1879, the homestead is open to visitors who wish to learn more of the history of the area and on lives of the early settlers.

To enjoy nature to the fullest, a visit to the 17 Mile Falls is a must. The waterfalls are accessible only after a few hours of trekking through the bush land, where there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching and animal viewing along the way. Campsites are provided near the falls for overnight stays.

There are also several annual festivals and events held in Northern Territory. Fishing enthusiasts from all over the territory and country converge in Borroloola for the Borroloola Barra Classic. This fishing event is held at the banks of the McArthur River every Easter weekend with accompanying singing and dancing events held during the evenings.

There are also entertainments and activities organized for the whole family during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. Though the event focuses on horse racing, amusement rides are available for children while the adults can indulge in exhibits and games held all throughout this four-week festivity.
