Darwin, Northern Territory

One of the more popular destinations in Darwin is the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, a vast tract of land dedicated for the cultivation of plants native to the country and from around the world. Accessed via the corner of Geranium Street and Gardens Road, the gardens are ideal for bird watching and bicycling. Visitors can also take walking paths that lead to ponds, waterfalls, rainforest, and mangroves.

Darwin has been considered the orchid capital of Australia and nowhere has this been greatly demonstrated that at the Majestic Orchids Farm located on Leonino Road. Visitors will get to see acres of flowering plants in this farm, which specializes in cultivating different orchid varieties. Apart from tours of the facility, the farm also sells bouquets of flowers and delivers them to anywhere in the country. Orchid packs are also available for those wishing to try their hand in cultivation.

Another interesting destination is located a short drive south of Darwin. The Territory Wildlife Park, situated on Cox Peninsula Road in Berry Springs, has several attractions that will certainly enthrall both children and adults. The park boasts of an extensive display of birds of prey and has an Aquarium Tunnel where visitors get to see numerous marine creatures. Some of the native animals are free to roam the premises and affords visitors close encounters with them.

There are also several exhibits and museums in Darwin that focuses on unique subjects, such as the Australian Pearling Exhibition, located at Wharf Precinct on Stokes Hill. The exhibit focuses on the pearling industry in the Northern Territory, from its early days up to modern times, with the equipments and tools used. Visitors can explore just how the region produces high-quality, fine pearls.

Another establishment worth a visit is the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre located along Stuart Highway. The center features several airplanes that were used in World War II. It also exhibits items and memorabilia related to the aviation history of the Northern Territory.

Darwin also boasts of several natural parks and reserves within and around its borders. One of which is the Djukbinj National Park, which is an important site for water birds, making it ideal for bird watching. Another good site for bird watching is the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, which has several wetlands within. The reserve, located along Arnhem Highway, also provides plenty of opportunities for bush walking.

Another extensive outdoor destination is the Litchfield National Park, accessed via Batchelor. The park has waterfalls, rainforests, and natural land formations that will surely delight any outdoor enthusiasts. Facilities for camping and caravans are provided for those wishing to enjoy the park’s natural treasures for several days. Bushwalking, animal viewing, and off-road driving are a few of its popular activities.

The city also boasts of several sporting facilities, particularly golf. There’s the Darwin Golf Club located on Links Road, as well as the Humpty Doo and Rural Area Golf Club on Pioneer Drive.

Fishing enthusiasts like to spend their days at the Barramundi Fishing Park in Howard Springs. The well-stocked billabong assures each visitor of a good catch as well as delicious meals out of barbecued barramundi.

Darwin also hosts several significant events all throughout the year. Among the more popular are the Darwin Pride Festival during May, the Darwin Fringe Festival in June, and the Darwin Cup Carnival.
