The Rocks

Photo Gallery Photo Gallery

The Rocks is a suburb located at the immediate northwest of the Sydney CBD in Sydney, New South Wales. Its place-name was derived from the original sandstone buildings that the early settlers built and lived in.

The Rocks is considered the oldest and most historic locality in the city, making it a prominent feature of any historic walk offered all throughout Sydney.

One interesting destination would be Argyle Terraces on Playfair Street. Almost all the historic terrace houses in the area have been converted to shops and retail spaces, though its heritage and aesthetic appeal are still very much visible up to the present times.

Along George Street is the Cadmans Cottage, built in 1816 and typically made of sandstone. The cottage now houses the Sydney Harbour National Park Information Centre as well as a local museum.

A similar establishment is the Colonial House Museum, along Lower Fort Street. This fine example of a colonial structure features several interesting artifacts and photos that are well worth the visit.

Those interested in contemporary art should take time to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art on George Street. Their extensive collections of art works by local and foreign artists provide hours of fun and learning for the whole family. The museum itself is housed within the Art Deco-style building that used to be the headquarters of the Maritime Services. In addition, souvenirs can be purchased at the MCA Store while sumptuous dishes are served at the MCA Cafe.

Art exhibits are also regularly organised at the S.H. Ervin Gallery along Watson Road, which focuses on Australian art. This public gallery is listed with the National Trust, a testament to its prominence in promoting the past and present works of Australian artists. Art lovers and enthusiasts frequently convene at the nearby Trust Cafe to debate and discuss related topics.

A visit to the Susannah Place Museum on Gloucester Street will also yield interesting information and insights. The museum focuses on the lives of the working class from the early 19th century to contemporary times, with its interiors diligently preserved to reflect their daily activities and preferences.

Local history is the main subject of exhibits at The Rocks Discovery Museum, located on Kendall Lane. Technology is used to provide information on what the area was like prior to settlement up to the early 20th century.

Shopping and live entertainment are the main attractions at The Rocks Centre, located at the corner of Playfair and Argyle Streets. The shops within this complex feature a whole wide range of items for sale, while restaurants offer opportunities for al fresco dining. Various performances are also held at The Rocks Square.

There are also several interesting community events held in The Rocks annually. One is The Rocks Aroma Festival, when the much-loved habit of coffee drinking is celebrated along with live entertainments. Coffee producers and coffee-making equipment manufacturers from all over the world converge to the area to showcase their products.

The Rocks is also one of the major venues for the National Trust Heritage Festival, a community event that primarily seeks to promote and highlight social and cultural heritage and to make sure you get to see The Rocks in all it's glory, there is heaps of accommodation in The Rocks available ensure all visitors enjoy a comfortable stay.
