Kings Cross, Sydney Region — New South Wales

Kings Cross is a locality situated east of Sydney Central Business District and is included in the local government area of the city itself. The place-name was given in honor of King Edward VII.

This area bears the notorious reputation of being a red light district, with a number of strip joints, bars, nightclubs, and adult-themed bookstores lining its streets. Because of its unsavory reputation, the city government, however, has been implementing a revitalization program that has seen considerable measures of success in the recent years.

A respite from the bustling pace of the area can be found at the Fitzroy Gardens along Macleay Street. These well-maintained gardens are ideal for strolling and jogging, with lots of shade provided by its numerous trees. The garden’s main feature, however, is the El Alamein Fountain. This water feature holds the distinction of being the original dandelion design made by Robert Woodward and was commissioned to commemorate soldiers who died in El Alamein, Egypt during World War II.

Kings Cross is home to no less than three theaters that cater to varied tastes and preferences of its patrons. These theaters include the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, the Old Fitzroy Theatre, and the Griffin Theatre Company.

No visitors to Kings Cross will fail to notice the large Coca Cola billboard located on the intersection of William Street and Darlinghurst Road. This iconic landmark is said to be the largest in the southern hemisphere and lit up by thousands of lights during the night.

Kings Cross is also a good starting point for those wishing to explore several popular destinations located nearby.

There’s the historic Elizabeth Bay House located in the suburb of the same name. This structure is open for those who wish to inspect its interiors that are well-preserved and well-maintained by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.

Another interesting establishment is the Art Gallery of New South Wales located at The Domain. This gallery is the second largest in the country, with displays focusing on Australian and Asian artworks.

Visitors should also take the time to visit the Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo Bay. This complex now houses a hotel, several restaurants, and residential apartments, including that of actor Russell Crowe.

In terms of accommodations, Kings Cross is also known as a backpackers’ haven. Establishments like The Globe Backpackers along Darlinghurst Road have been offering affordable rates that are hard to find anywhere else.

For less than $100 AUD, visitors can also avail of accommodations at the Hotel Formule 1 Kings Cross on William Street, which caters to individuals, families, or groups of friends.

Also along William Street is the O'Malley's Hotel, itself a historic structure built in 1907 and carefully maintained all through the years.

A bit luxurious accommodation can be found at the DLux Budget Hotel on Darlinghurst Road, where patrons have access to nearby entertainment venues and nightlife.

During Fall season, the locality comes alive with the organization of the Kings Cross Food and Wine Festival. This event is participated by virtually all business establishments in the area and draws visitors far and wide to sample local treats.
