Darlinghurst, Sydney Region — New South Wales

Darlinghurst is a suburb located in the eastern part of Sydney, right next to its central business district. The place-name was said to be given in honor of Elizabeth Darling, wife of Ralph Darling, the Governor in the early part of the 19th century.

In present times, the suburb is more famously associated with its bustling nightlife. Every night, the central Oxford Street and its neighboring avenues come alive with the lights of numerous nightclubs, discos and bars. Darlinghurst also boasts of a significant gay community who organized the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras held every February. The festival actually lasts for several weeks, with film festivals, theatrical and music performances, as well as dance parties open to the public. Its grandest event is the parade which features floats and costumed performers.

For those preferring a more sedate leisure, there are several well-known museums located in Darlinghurst. The Sydney Jewish Museum along Darlinghurst Road is primarily focused on the Holocaust, which visitors can know about from its displays and from guides themselves who were Holocaust survivors. The museum also touches on the history of Jewish communities in the country.

The other popular museum in the area is the Australian Museum on College Street. Established in 1827, the museum is considered to be the oldest in Australia. Its displays are primarily centered on natural history and anthropology, though the museum also holds a reputation as an excellent research institution.

Art lovers and collectors can come by the Artery Aboriginal Art along Darlinghurst Road, where contemporary artworks of Aboriginal artists can be bought.

There are also several historic structures in this suburb and one of which is the Darlinghurst Courthouse. This Greek Revival-style landmark is situated at Taylor Square and was built in 1844.

Next to the courthouse is the Darlinghurst Gaol, built in the early part of the 19th century. This attraction is actually a complex of sandstone buildings that now houses the National Art School.

The suburb has several streets that possess distinct characteristics. Victoria Street is famous for its string of coffeehouses on both sides. Most residents and visitors come here to relax and spend the rest of the day drinking coffee and immersing in Darlinghurst’s eclectic ambience. Stanley Street, on the other hand, is known for its numerous restaurants offering patrons with a wide variety of cuisine and dishes to choose from.

The main outdoor destination in the area is Hyde Park, where a war memorial is located in its southern end. There are also other structures of interest within the park, such as the obelisk on its western side and the Archibald Fountain in the northern end. There are several well-kept gardens within the premises and Hyde Park is ideal for strolling, jogging, picnics, and biking.

While strolling along the streets of Darlinghurst, visitors will not help but notice several beautiful apartment buildings they will pass along the way. These structures have been dated to be from the early 20th centuries and provide some sort of old-world charm to the suburb.
