Darling Harbour is a locality situated within the Sydney CBD in Sydney, New South Wales. This largely commercial area was named after Ralph Darling, who was governor of New South Wales during the early 19th century.

Shopping enthusiasts from all over the country and the world will feel right at home in Darling Harbour with its Harbourside commercial complex, home to more than a hundred shops that sell wide varieties of items and merchandise. Those interested in purchasing Aboriginal art should stop by the Gavala Aboriginal Art And Cultural Education Centre, where they can be assured of purchasing authentic paintings made by Aboriginal artists from all over the country. After wandering around this complex, visitors can then proceed to Cockle Bay and Kings Street Wharf to browse through more retail outlets.

Souvenirs and gift items can also be purchased at Paddy's Market in Haymarket, were bargains can surely be had. The market is also a good source of fresh produce and seafood.

There are numerous restaurants and cafes dotting Darling Harbour, providing ample dining and refreshment options to visitors who flock to this locality the whole year through. A point of interest is the Cockle Bay Wharf, where restaurant patrons can experience dining al fresco and enjoying beautiful views of the bay at the same time.

The area's most popular attraction is the Sydney Aquarium, with the largest collection of marine creatures in the country. These animals can be viewed through the underwater tunnel that provides unparallel views from all around.

Also located at the Aquarium Pier is the Sydney Wildlife World, which features animals native to the country and exhibits them in areas replicating their natural habitat. Its popular attractions include the feeding of animals and the interactive bird shows.

Another popular family destination is the Australian National Maritime Museum on Murray Street. Included in its permanent exhibits are the Spirit of Australia and the HMAS Vampire, as well as a replica of the Endeavour, the sailing vessel of Captain Cook. During holidays and weekends, children can take part of interactive and hands-on activities designed for fun and learning. Visitors shouldn't also miss the Welcome Wall, located at the northern wall of the museum. This particular structure is made of bronze and commemorates the settlers of the country.

Those interested in arts and sciences should pay a visit to the Powerhouse Museum, where different items and equipments related to technology are on exhibit. Its major attractions include the oldest steam engine in the world, a working model of the astronomical clock found at the Notre Dame Cathedral in France, and its exhibit on decorative arts and design.

For a bit of relaxation and quiet, there's the Chinese Garden of Friendship, located at the South End. For a small entrance fee, visitors can stroll along its paths and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. The garden has been a favorite venue for weddings and other special events.

There are several annual events hosted by Darling Harbour that draws large crowds from all over. January is when the Australia Day is held, with great fanfare and attractions. Well-loved events include the parade of ships at Cockle Bay, fireworks displays, and music performances.

The Chinese New Year also heralds the Dragon Boat Races on the harbor. Lasting for two days, the event is also accompanied by dragon dances and Chinese food offerings on the streets of Darling Harbour.
