Artarmon is a suburb located northwest of the Sydney Central Business District, located within the local government area of the City of Willoughby. The place-name was derived from an estate in Ireland.
The suburb is composed of residential, commercial, and industrial areas that lend a decidedly distinct characteristic to Artarmon.
There are also several media establishments and structures within and around the area. A transmission tower for the Seven Nine and Ten Networks is situated along Hampden Road. On Herbert Street are the SBS studios while the Nine Network studios and the Australian Broadcasting Corp. are located in nearby Willoughby and Gore Hill, respectively.
The suburb’s immediate destination for outdoor recreation is the Artarmon Reserve. Though decidedly small in size, the reserve provides ample space for quiet strolls and bird watching.
Walking and jogging can also be done at the Thomson Park.
And while Artarmon has no significant natural attraction to boast of, it is located near the Lane Cove Bushland Reserve. This reserve is ideal for taking walks and familiarizing oneself with the native plants of the state and the country. The banks of the Gore Creek are also ideal for picnics while several walking tracks allow city dwellers to experience the beauty of nature without leaving the suburbs. This reserve is home to a significant number of birds, making it an excellent destination for those wishing to do some bird watching. Further southwest is the Gore Creek Reserve, also ideal for some outdoor recreation.
A bigger body of water, the Lane Cove River, is located northwest of Artarmon and presents additional options for swimming, fishing, and boating. The banks are also ideal spots for rest and relaxation.
Also located on the west of Artarmon and still in Lane Cove is the Lane Cove Country Club. This nine-hole golf course provides access to golfing enthusiasts who yearns for a game or two within a suburban setting. Next to the golf course is the Lane Cove Tennis Centre with facilities open to the public. And after indulging in these sports, visitors can head out to the nearby Lane Cove Aquatic centre, a popular swimming destination for the whole family. This particular establishment also has spa and sauna facilities.
Those wishing to indulge in a bit of shopping spree should head out to Chatswood, north of Artarmon. This area boasts of several shopping malls, including the Westfield, the Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre, and the Mandarin Centre.
The nearby Woodford Bay provides opportunities for water sports enthusiasts to indulge in their favorite pastime. There are also numerous sailing vessels taking shelter in the bay and some can be chartered for a day trip to the coast.
For accommodations, visitors can head out to the Punt Hill North Shore Inn along Pacific Highway, which boasts of contemporary facilities as well as an onsite restaurant. Also located along the Pacific Highway in Artarmon is the Best Western Twin Towers Inn Hotel, which caters to both business travelers and holiday makers. Both hotels are located just minutes away from major Sydney attractions like the Sydney Harbor and the Sydney Opera House.
