Merimbula
Merimbula is a coastal town located in the South Coast region of New South Wales. Situated on the mouth of Merimbula River, the town's coastal and inland attractions has made tourism its major industry.
One of the town's main attractions is the number of historic buildings and structures that are still well-preserved and well-maintained up to the present.
The town's museum, operated by the Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society, is housed in what used to be the old Public School building constructed in 1874. There is also an oyster punt located at the side of the structure that is known to date back to 1915.
Another historic structure worth a visit is the Munn Tower House, a cottage built in 1870 by a local businessman.
The town's wharf, along Lake Street, is also a well-known attraction, with its storage sheds classified by the National Trust and are now used as eating establishment and also houses the Merimbula Aquarium.
Most visitors come to Merimbula to enjoy its beaches, to swim and fish in it. Most of these beaches, like the Main Beach, Bar Beach, and Middle Beach, have facilities for picnics and barbecues. Though a number of water sports can also be done in these areas, there are some visitors who prefer to take relaxing strolls under the sun and enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze.
Another good destination for the whole family is the Wallagoot Lagoon, located north of town. There are safe swimming spots are designated for children, while the whole lagoon is ideal for fishing and water sports, such as water skiing, sailing, canoeing, and wind surfing. Picnic facilities are also provided, while the nearby Bournda National Park affords peace and tranquility in its natural settings.
Family outings can also be done at the Magic Mountain Recreation Park, along Tula Beach Road. Both children and adults will surely enjoy its toboggan run, mini golf course, and water slides. The park also features a maze and a roller coaster. Much more sedate activities like bushwalking and animal viewing are also possible, with the park situated within an extensive bush land.
Merimbula also hosts several festivals that are drawing crowds from within and around its borders. The annual Jazz Festival is commonly held every June in different venues, with musical performances, dancing, and a parade.
In August, the town plays host to the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club Winter Orchid Show, held in Twyford Hall. This event brings a convergence of both local and visiting orchid growers who will compete in several categories.
But it is during November, however, that a number of events are held all throughout the town. There's the Australian Native Orchid Show also in Twyford Hall, which primarily showcases different varieties of Sarcanthinae orchids.
On the other hand, the Merimbula-Imlay Bowling Club is the chosen venue for the Country Music Festival, participated by country music lovers from all over the state.
The beaches of Merimbula come alive during the later part of November with the Mambo Festival, which actually consists of kite boarding and windsurfing events.
