Sussex Inlet is a small, attractive town located in the South Coast region of New South Wales. It is situated on the western bank of a waterway bearing the same name that separates the town from Jervis Territory.
The town enjoys close proximity to the shores of St. Georges Basin and to the Sussex Inlet Beach. Because it quite a drive from the Princes Highway, the visitors who come to Sussex Inlet are the ones who seek more of peace and seclusion rather than merrymaking during their holidays.
This has also made the beaches near the town pristine and unspoiled, providing ample space for each and every visitor to stretch out and relax under the hot Australian sun. Swimming, surfing, and sailing are just few of the popular activities done on this particular shoreline of the Tasman Sea.
The town is ideal setting for several water-based recreations. Boats can be hired for deep sea fishing and scuba diving out in the Tasman Sea or within the basin. The Sussex Inlet waterway is also well-stocked with different fish species, making it ideal for casting the line in, sitting back to relax, and wait for a bite. Lucky visitors may even get to participate in the town’s Annual Family Fishing Carnival, an event that draws fishing enthusiasts and their families far and wide.
Every second Saturday of the month, crowds fill the grounds of the Uniting Church on Jacobs Drive for the town’s market. Local produce and products are traded during this event and visitors get a chance to purchase souvenir items to take home.
A much bigger event, the Lion’s Country Fair, is held every October at the Lions Park in South Sussex.
A smaller body of water, the Swan Lake, is located south west of town and is also a popular swimming and fishing destination. Prawns are also harvested in season and supplied to nearby eating establishments.
To provide a bit of urban leisure, there’s the Sussex Inlet Golf Club along Golfcourse Way. This 9-hole golf course boasts of providing friendly atmosphere and service to its patrons. Facilities for barbecues are also provided.
A nearby bowling facility, cinema, and clubs provide locals and visitors with alternatives for entertainment.
One good way to explore Sussex Inlet on foot is to take the Waterside Walk Trail, along streets located beside the town’s waterways. Sometimes visitors get to make a stop at the riverside reserve, where numerous birds and animals live.
There are also several biking trails that are provided for outdoor enthusiasts. Rental bicycles are also available so visitors can also explore the town on two wheels.
For those interested in more serious bush walking, the Boyd Lookout and the Berrara Lagoon provide ideal settings. These spots feature some vantage points to enjoy the coast and the spectacular natural landscape.
Sussex Inlet is also located on the border of the Booderee National Park, on Jervis Bay Territory. The park boasts of numerous animals and towering trees that allow each visitor to commune with Mother Nature. The park also borders on several white-sand beaches that can be liken to one’s idea of paradise.
