Mollymook is a sprawling seaside resort located in the South Coast region of New South Wales. The place-name is said to be derived from the name of a variety of albatross species.
The area is a popular tourist destination, mainly because of its unbroken stretch of white-sand beach and establishment of numerous service-oriented businesses. Visitors have the option of spending their holidays in complete rest and relaxation, or indulging in several water sports.
Many avid surfers profess that Mollymook Beach is one of the top surfing spots of the country. In fact, the beach has already played host to surf lifesaving carnivals in the state and national levels. This has contributed to the tourism appeal of the area, with additional opportunities for sailing, water skiing, and fishing.
The area boasts of a single lookout, located on Bannisters Point, that affords visitors with spectacular views of the coastline and the nearby bush land. This lookout is also a good spot to catch glimpses of the dolphins that call the nearby waters home. Whales are also seen frequently several times of the year, contributing to the popularity of whale-watching cruises.
Families with small children usually head out to the north of Mollymook, on the spot where the Narrawallee Creek meets the ocean. The inlet’s shallow waters are ideal for hours of frolic, while picnic and barbecue facilities are available nearby.
Near the inlet is the Narrawallee Creek Nature Reserve, accessed through the Lake Conjola Entrance Road. The reserve has several walking tracks that lead to different scenic spots. The beaches adjoining the reserve are especially suited for surfing, while water birds flock to Pattimores Lagoon, situated on the reserve’s northern end and an ideal spot for bird watching. A picnic area is also designated within the reserve.
Another popular swimming destination is the ‘Bogey Hole’ located in Mollymook Headland. This tidal pool is a good place to swim in, especially during low tide. Snorkeling is also a popular activity. There are also several beautiful diving spots offshore, and visitors can always hire equipments and boats for a day of unforgettable underwater adventure.
Mollymook certainly lives up to its reputation as the ideal resort, with the presence of two golfing facilities—the Mollymook Golf Club and the Mollymook Beachside Golf Course. Though the former is decidedly much larger than the latter, both facilities afford golfing enthusiasts with opportunities to play their favorite sport with the scenic coastal and bush land views as backdrops.
