Batemans Bay is a town located in the South Coast region of New South Wales, on the mouth of Clyde River. The place-name was given by Captain Cook, after Nathaniel Bateman, his superior and a ship captain.
The town promotes itself as a relaxed beachside destination for the whole family. Most of them enjoy the town’s beaches, swimming, surfing, and fishing. There are also numerous areas designated for picnics and barbecues. The beaches are part of several walking paths in and around the town, where visitors get to stroll and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Another popular family destination is the Birdland Animal Park, where children get the chance to handle different animals in the premises. A train ride takes visitors around, to duck ponds and waterfalls, as well as a visit to the nursery.
There are several tour operators that offer cruises along Clyde River, to enjoy the different views it offers. Canoes and kayaks can also be rented by those wishing to explore the river by themselves.
With numerous spectacular views all around, it’s but only logical for Batemans Bay to have several lookouts.
The Benandrah State Forest, accessed through the Kings Highway, is located within the Benandrah State Forest and is worth a visit especially among first-time visitors.
South of the town and along Princes Highway is the Round Hill Fire Tower Lookout. For the more vigorous individuals, this lookout can be reached on foot and the views on the viewing platform are worth all the efforts.
The bush land surrounding the town is ideal for hiking. The nearby Clyde Mountain is often the destination of those who wish to experience some quiet moments with nature.
The estuary is a popular fishing spot, guaranteed to give a good catch even to the inexperienced fisherman. There are several boats in the town’s marina that can be hired for boat fishing and deep sea fishing expeditions.
Along the banks of the river is the Innes Boatshed, accessed through Clyde Street. This structure is quite old and historic, and presently features a restaurant offering the freshest catch.
Batemans Bay also supports a healthy oyster farming industry. On North Street is the Pearly Oyster Bar and Farm, which sells the freshest oysters at a much cheaper price than found in markets.
Visitors who stop by the Treasures from the Deep - Opal and Shell Museum, on Beach Road, will be amazed at the variety of items it showcases. There’s an extensive shell collection from all part of the world, as well as collections of opals mined from different parts of Australia. This is a good place to purchase unusual souvenirs to take home, with visitors choosing from its wide range of minerals, fossils, jewelry, and art works.
Leisure can also be had at the town’s golfing facilities. The Batemans Bay Mini Golf, on Vesper Street, is a popular destination for visitors and locals alike.
