Tweed Heads is a popular town located at the mouth of the Tweed River in the far New South Wales coast. Tweed Heads is famous as the border town of New South Wales and Queensland. In fact, Queensland’s Coolangatta and Tweed Heads are known as ‘twin towns’ for their proximity and shared economy. Both share a main street that straddles the state border.

The border area is marked by a huge memorial for Captain Cook and is called Point Danger. The high point of Point Danger is that you can actually stand in both states at the same time and can even change time zones. You can have twin celebrations of New Year within an hour just by crossing the street as New South Wales observes daylight saving but Queensland doesn’t!

The area is etched in the history books as witness to a volcanic activity in the southern hemisphere that resulted in the largest caldera (volcanic rim) at Mount Warning. The rainforests at Springbrook, Mount Warning and Lamington National Parks are also worth a visit if you prefer wildlife on your itinerary.

Tweed River is the place to flock for some aquatic fun. Boating, canoeing, fishing and kayaking are ideal pastimes at the River. Rent a tinny (aluminum runabout) or barbecue boat to enjoy fishing in the Tweed estuary and Broadwater, or take a river cruise that serves gourmet seafood meals aboard.  For some other water sports, there are plenty of beaches to keep you interested.

The Minjungbal Aboriginal Cultural Center to the south of Tweed Heads has some exquisite exhibits that trace the history of the area and the rich cultural heritage of aboriginals.
