Murwillumbah is a town located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, a mere 13 kilometers from the border of Queensland. It is located on the banks of the Tweed River, at the foot of the McPherson Range. The place-name is a combination of Aboriginal words that translates to 'camping place'.

The town's visitor information center shares its office with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, making the whole entity known as The World Heritage Rainforest Centre. Situated on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Alma Street, it is a good destination for first time visitors wishing to solicit information on how to go about in the area.

Before venturing out in the surrounding areas, there are several notable sites worth visiting within Murwillumbah. Among them is the historic Courthouse and Police Station, built in the early part of the 19th century and located on Main Street. The local history museum is located on the corner of Bent Street and Queensland Road and is housed in the structure built in 1910. Bent Street also leads to the town's reservoir where the Lion's Lookout is situated. The area also features facilities for picnics and barbecues.

Along the Upper Crystal Creek Road is the Palmdale Stud farm, always worth a visit for its real miniature animals. The farm also features a cafe and a gift shop.

A short drive along the Pacific Highway, north east of the town, is the Condong Sugar Mill. Visitors are welcome from July to November, to view the sugar making process.

Another natural attraction that visitors shouldn't miss is the 'Natural Arch', accessed through Nerang Road. This naturally made cavern has a hole on its top where water from the creek above falls through and provides for an interesting sight. The area boasts of yet another attraction, the glow-worms which adorn the roof of the cavern. During night time, these worms emit their own light to attract prey to their web. Though visitors are allowed to view them at a distance, light and noise must be kept to minimum to as not to destroy these frail creatures, which are actually larvae of a fungus fly. The immediate area consists of the Springbrook National Park, ideal for bird watching, animal viewing and bush walking. There is also a designated picnic area for families and groups of friends.

Another interesting destination for the whole family is the Tropical Fruit World, a plantation of tropical fruits with several entertainment features. Visitors are treated to tractor rides, while there's the Treasure Island theme park nearby. This complex incorporates mini train rides, a playground, a huge koi pond and the Gardens of the World. There is also the Magic Garden Show where visitors are treated to different fruit samples.

Murwillumbah comes alive during late August and early September for its Banana Festival, when anything and everything related to this particular fruit is showcased. Come November, the town also celebrates the Agricultural Show, where local produce and livestock take center stage. The Murwillumbah Cottage Market is held every first and third Saturday of the month and focuses on the works of local artists and artisans.

To experience all Murwillumbah has to offer, there are numerous Murwillumbah accommodation options to choose from depending on what visitors are looking for - this includes motels, retreats and B&Bs.
