Brunswick Heads, Northern Rivers
Brunswick Heads
For those looking for a quiet place to spend their holidays in, Brunswick Heads is the destination for them. Brunswick Heads is a town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, situated on the mouth of Brunswick River. The town is bypassed by the Pacific Highway, so it is not a frequent tourist stop and is not that crowded during holidays.
The town's beach is a major attraction of the area, providing ideal setting for surfing, sailing, water-skiing, and other water sports. There are also ample opportunities for swimming and fishing. The beach also has designated spots for picnics and barbecues.
The town boasts of two nearby nature reserves, the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve and the Tyagarah Nature Reserve where bush walking and bird watching are some of the more popular activities. The former is the remnant of a once extensive sub-tropical rainforest and features a mangrove that provides shelter to marine organisms. The latter is adjacent to a pristine beach that is suitable for walking and animal viewing. The town's commercial center is uniquely located overlooking this reserve and a footbridge over Simpsons Creek connects them. This affords shoppers with spectacular views while visiting one shop to another.
The small harbor in Brunswick Heads offers shelter to different kinds of sailing vessels, making it possible for visitors to come to the town via the coastal waters. Boats and other sailing vessels can also be hired for deep sea fishing and scuba diving trips, with the Marine Park located in the nearby Byron Bay.
Visitors can also rent a canoe and explore the river by themselves or with a guide. There are several scenic views and animals to be spotted along the banks, affording an unforgettable experience to the ones who tried it.
Another worthwhile activity is to go sea kayaking at the Marine Park in Byron Bay, located south of the town.
The river also provides an alternative option for swimming and fishing, with lots of shallow waters and shady areas to take a dip in or throw a fishing line. There are also several picnic and barbecue facilities provided.
The town has several bicycle paths within and around its borders, and mountain bikes can be rented by visitors at several hire companies. This provides the whole family with fun time together while exploring Brunswick Heads' natural surroundings.
There are also several community events that bring residents and tourists together several times of the year. The Old and Gold Festival, conducted every June, is a one-day event that is celebrated with garage sales, historical walks around town, displays of vintage cars, and entertainment for the whole family.
The town also hosts the annual Kites and Bikes Festival, held in October or November. Demonstrations for kite-making are organized, while large kites are being flown at the beach. The bicycle is the king of the road during this festival, with most of the town's roads closed to allow even the kids to ride their bikes. There are also demonstrations of biking and skateboarding tricks to highlight the event.
Every first Saturday of the month is market day in Brunswick Heads, when local produce and products are traded. The event is held in Memorial Park, near the riverbank.
