Yamba, North Coast — New South Wales

Yamba is a town located at the mouth of the Clarence River, on the North Coast region of New South Wales.

The town’s beaches are just several of its popular attractions. At Yamba Beach, the town’s primary swimming spot, kayaking and surfing are popular activities. The beach is also adjacent to Flinders Park, a favorite picnic destination for both locals and visitors. There is also a rock pool within the beach to ensure safe swimming, particularly among children. Another safe spot for children to frolic in is the calm waters of the Whiting Beach, a river beach beyond the break wall. Stretching from the end of Yamba Beach to Yamba Point is Convent Beach, while beyond is the Pippi Beach. This particular beach is the setting for the annual Beach Surf Classic, an indication of the superb quality of the area’s surfing waters.  Most of the town’s beaches are patrolled in summer, when the largest influx of visitors occurs.

Also located in the shores of the town is the Yamba Lighthouse, at the end of Pilot Street. The lighthouse is a good vantage point for whale watching during the winter months, when these cetaceans are en route to migrating waters.

Several good fishing spots can be found in the estuary area and in the beaches, while boats can also be hired by deep-sea fishing enthusiasts.

For a bit of local history, visitors can go to the Story House Museum on Wooli Street. The museum features pictures, memorabilia, and a miniature schoolroom, all related to the settlement and growth of the town.

At the Yuraygir National Park, there are several walking tracks affording scenic views of the coast and surrounding bushland. Picnic facilities are provided and the area also has camping grounds. Nearby is the Angourie Point, fast becoming a popular destination for avid surfers.

Those seeking to purchase several art works from local artists can head out to the Reception Gallery at Australis Angourie Rainforest Resort. Items for sale include glassworks, painting, pictures, and pottery. This particular establishment is located along Angourie Road.

Within the city, there are several destinations that visitors shouldn’t miss. Arthouse Australia is both a gallery and a workshop located on Coldstream Street. Works of several local artists are displayed, while art materials can be purchased so visitors can try their hand in making their own artiwork pieces and discover their creativity.

The Yamba Community Markets is where locals and visitors converge to purchase products from the town and its surrounding areas. Located at the Yamba Ova on River Street, the numerous market stalls have something for everyone.

Another popular destination is the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club, on Wooli Street. Besides facilities for bowling, the area also has eating establishments, as well as function rooms for conferences and conventions.

The town also hosts the bi-annual Surfing the Coldstream Festival, celebrating the town’s art scene and cultural aspects.

Another activity that brings tourists to the area is the Lower Clarence Aboriginal Tourist Site Drive. This activity is meant to raise awareness on the culture of Aboriginal peoples by visiting some of their sites in the area.
