Taree, North Coast — New South Wales

Taree is a city located within the North Coast region of New South Wales, along the Manning River. The place-name is an Aboriginal word for ‘tree by the river.’ Specifically, the tree alluded here is the local Sandpaper Fig.

There are cruises available up and down the river, departing from the nearby Fotheringham Park. The park is a favorite destination for picnics and short strolls. It also boasts of the unique 'Herb and Sculpture Garden' that features tiled posts and herbs maintained for public consumption.

The Bicentennial Gardens, situated along William Wynter Drive, is also a favorite outdoor destination for both visitors and locals. It is especially well known as a wedding venue, with lots of shades provided by numerous trees planted in remembrance to original settlers of the place.

The area’s other natural attraction can be found further beyond the city limits. The Kiwarrak State Forest is located south of Taree and features the Breakneck Lookout that affords visitors with spectacular views of the river and surrounding bush land. There is also a designated picnic area for a bit of rest and relaxation. For more excitement, visitors should also drop by the Clarendon Forest Retreat Horse Riding, located nearby along Coates Road. The establishment offers guided tours on horse back around the forested area, with different levels of difficulties. Accommodations are also available for those wishing to stay the night.

Visitors can also take the Coopernook Forest Drive, which takes them to several forested areas that afford scenic views and opportunities for bird watching and animal viewing.

Within the city limits are several historic houses and buildings that attest to Taree’s rich heritage. A brochure can be procured at the Visitor Information Centre, located along Pacific Highway, on the northern part of the city.

One interesting structure worth a visit is the Taree Public School, an interesting building on Albert Street. Also on the same street is the Saint Paul’s Presbyterian Church and was constructed of Victorian Gothic Revival style in 1869.

Another historic religious structure is located nearby, the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church that was built in the 1930s.

Also within the area is the Court House, with trees surrounding it and adding to its aesthetic appeal. The building was built in 1897.

Antique lovers also love to drop by several shops located in Taree, like the Isadora's Antiques, Savoy Centre along Manning Street, the Little Darlings Doll Museum & Coffee Shop along Failford Road, and The Flicks Antiques and Café on Oxley Street.

Interesting items can also be purchased at Clancy's Used Furniture Warehouse on High Street, as well as at the Firefly Pottery along Firefly Road.

Golfing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the city also has its own Club Taree golf course. Situated along Wingham Road, the establishment also has facilities for conventions and conferences.

The Taree Leagues Sports Club, situated on Cowper Street, is a social venue which features a bar, bowling greens, restaurant, and musical entertainment on weekends.

Another good bowling destination is the Taree Tenpin Bowl on Muldoon Street, where families can have fun while playing in this 12-lane facility.

Visitors shouldn’t leave Taree without a visit to the town’s Big Oyster, a dubious landmark that was meant to promote the oyster industry in the area. The building, located along the Pacific Highway, has a large oyster-shaped upper floor.
