
South West Rocks is a town located in the North Coast region of New South Wales, near the mouth of the Macleay River. The town itself is situated on Trial Bay, named after the ill-fated brig Trial that got wrecked right on the bay in 1817.
With its beautiful beaches and numerous accommodations, most tourists visit South West Rocks to get away from the rigors of everyday life and enjoy quiet holidays. In fact, tourism is the town’s main industry, with lots of service-related businesses established in the recent years. Residential developments have been slowly changing the landscape of this town, with increasing number of people deciding to make South West Rocks home.
First-time visitors should head out to the town’s Tourist Information Centre, located on Ocean Drive. The center is housed in the Boatman’s Cottage, which also features a maritime museum. On its grounds is the ‘Macleay,’ the first powered boat that cruised up and down the nearby river.
South West Rocks’ shores is a notorious site for shipwrecks. Today, visitors can see remnants of these ill-fated vessels during low tide, while taking leisurely strolls on its pristine sands and enjoying fresh ocean breeze.
The town’s front beach is a popular holiday destination, for swimming and fishing. Consequently, there are several quality accommodations dotting its nearby areas.
Swimming and other water-related recreational activities can also be had at the Horseshoe Bay Beach. This well-patrolled beach is close enough to the town’s center to become a popular family destination for picnics and barbecues.
Avid scuba diving enthusiasts come to South West Rocks for one interesting underwater attraction, the Fish Rock Cave. Considered one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, the cave is home to a myriad of marine organisms and a visit would serve as highlight to any diving trip. There are also several beautiful dive sites nearby, catering to scuba divers in all levels of expertise.
Those interested in historically-significant structures should take a tour around the Trial Bay Gaol, the town’s most identified landmark. Built in 1886, these well-preserved ruins have its own museum in its premises. It is located east of the town, accessed through Cardwell Street.
The gaol is incorporated within the Arkaroon State Recreation Area, which features several scenic walks around the area, including one that leads to the Hat Head National Park. A camping site is also provided, as well as facilities for swimming, boating, and fishing.
Nearby is the Smoky Cape Lighthouse, which provides a vantage point for spectacular views of the coast and surrounding bushland. The lighthouse keeper’s cottage, coach house, and stables are also nearby and are historically important, having been built in the late 19th century by architect James Barnet.
South West Rocks is also not without its urban attractions. The town boasts of several shops along Prince of Wales Avenue, as well as The Rocks Shopping Fair.
Further down the river, on the southern end of the town, is the hamlet of Jerseyville, with a lot of beautiful quaint houses in the area that are worth a visit.
