One Mile Beach, North Coast — New South Wales

One Mile Beach is a neighborhood located in the Hunter Region, within the Port Stephens Local Government Area. Logically, the area’s biggest attraction is the beach of the same name, with its pristine waters and powdery white sand.

The area is located within the Tomaree National Park, where there are several paths for bushwalking. Plenty of scenic views can be had as one wanders through this park, with ample opportunities for animal viewing and bird watching. There are also several designated spots for picnics, making it a popular destination for families and groups of friends.

A walk to the Tomaree Headland is especially worth the effort, affording those who reach its peak breathtaking views of the coast and the surrounding bush land.

Walking the beach is also a good idea, particularly for first time visitors who want to get familiar with this stretch of sand and surf. For those who don’t feel like walking, bicycles can also be rented. The area also has some shady and grassy spots, making it quite ideal for picnics and barbecues.

Fishing enthusiasts come to One Mile Beach for its numerous, fabulous fishing spots, especially along Morna Point. There are ample opportunities for beach, rock, or deep sea fishing beyond the aquatic reserve.

The beach is also a well known destination for surfers of all ages and levels of abilities. Many flock to the beach every morning looking for that perfect swell, and most are not disappointed. First time learners need not worry, as the protected location of the beach and gradual deepening of the waters make it ideal for those surfing for the first time. The nearby Anna Bay Surf School is more than willing to impart a lesson or two for the whole family.

One Mile Beach and the rest of Port Stephens boast of another kind of resident, the dolphins frolicking in bay waters. Boats can be chartered for close encounters with these animals, and most of them are already used to human presence and may even put on a show for the viewers’ benefit. During the months of May to November, another kind of visitor pays a visit. Whales pass by the coast on their way to migration, and lucky individuals may catch a glimpse or two.

There are also several dive centers in the area that offers scuba diving trips. One Mile Beach is part of the Halifax Park Aquatic Reserve where marine organisms are protected and fishing is forbidden. This leads to the proliferation of fishes, corals, and other underwater creatures that provide spectacular underwater sights for diving and snorkeling.

For those more interested in land-based recreation, golfing facilities are in nearby Salamander Bay and One Mile Beach. The sand dunes of Stockton Beach are also worth exploring, with four-wheel and six-wheel drives available for families and groups of friends.

The nearby area also has several wineries worth a visit from those wishing to sample their wine products. Near One Mile Beach are the Divers Luck Boutique Winery, Port Stephens Winery & Boutique Wine Centre, and the Wonganella Wines. These wineries open their cellar doors for wine tasting and also offer tours for those with appointments.
