Moama is a town found within the Riverina region of New South Wales. It is located on the northern banks of the Murray River, across the town of Echuca, which is in the state of Victoria. The place-name was derived from an indigenous word which means ‘burial ground.’
Though the town only has a population of less than 4,000, this can almost double during holidays as visitors from both sides of the river converge to Moama for a bit of country relaxation.
Both locals and visitors often take the time to go to the Horseshoe Lagoon Reserve, located on the eastern part of the bridge to Echuca. Most enjoy the scenic views afforded by the river. There are several walking tracks meandering through the reserve, with plenty of opportunities for bird watching. The area is also replete with river red gums that provide ample shade. During weekends and holidays, a miniature railway operates in one part of the reserve and crosses over to adjoining park on Meninya Street.
Near the reserve is the Moama Wharf, where visitors can board the paddle steamers that offer cruises up and down the Murray River.
The river is also a popular destination for swimming and fishing, with shady areas ideal for picnics and barbecues.
Visitors can also visit the Firedust Horseriding, where opportunities for horseback riding await the whole family.
Golfing enthusiasts often head out to the Rich River Golf Club for a round or two of their favorite pastime, while the Moama Bowling Club provides facilities for lawn bowls. These sporting venues are quite known nationwide, making them popular venues for several tournaments and competitions.
At the Chanter Estate, along the street bearing the same name, three attractions draw visiting crowds. First is the historic structure that was relocated within the premises, an old church building that is already a century old. The second attraction is the vineyard and wine tasting room, where the estate’s prized wine products are available for leisurely sampling. The third crowd-drawer is the Historic Commercial & Military vehicle exhibit, where vehicles manufactured from the 1900s up to the 1940s are displayed. Some of these vehicles have already been featured in several films.
Visitors who drove all the way to Moama from the northwestern part of New South Wales, taking the Cobb Highway, had surely encountered the Long Paddock. This attraction consists of a series of interpretive panels situated in strategic spots that depicts the country’s history, focusing on the days of the pioneers and cattle drovers.
The area also has several wineries and vineyards that periodically produce high-quality wines. Examples of which would be the Silverfox Wines, located on Perricoota Road. Another establishment that offers wine tasting to the public is the Morrisons Riverview Estate, located along Merool La. The estate also has a restaurant that provides superb dishes, accompanied by several of their fine wines. Another notable establishment of the same kind is the St. Anne’s Winery, situated along 24 Lane.
Most of the town’s urban leisure is found along Meninya Street, where several shops and accommodations are located.
