Barham, Murray Riverina Region — New South Wales

Barham is a town located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, considered the largest in the Wakool Shire. It is situated along the banks of the Murray River, and was home to the Wemba-Wemba Aborigines long before European settlers move in. The fertile soil in and around the town has made agriculture its main industry, and has paved the way for the establishment of dairy farms, cattle ranches, and a number of fruit orchards.

Due to its proximity to the state of Victoria, most residents are influenced by its way of life, including patronizing its media facilities.

The town has several destinations for recreation within and around its borders. The Barham Lakes Complex, located in the eastern part of the town, is composed of several artificial lakes teeming with fishes. Swimming, picnics, and barbecues are common activities for families and groups of friends. There is also a walking track in this reclaimed land.

Another popular family destination is the Barham Sandbar, accessed through the Hudson Boulevard, and near the Barham Caravan Park.

Nearby is the Barham Bridge, a lift bridge that was constructed in 1904, and therefore, is considered one of the oldest bridges on the Murray River. It was used to let paddle steamers through, vessels that were once significant to the town’s history and economy.

The town has two known parks, the Riverside Park located near the caravan park and the Lions Park. Both are favorite settings for picnics and barbecues.

The Koondrock State Forest is ideal for bird watching and leisure drives. This attraction is accessed through the Moulamein Road, and apart from birds, supports a variety of wildlife, including kangaroos and wild pigs.

Visitors should know that the area is the location of several Aboriginal middens that are protected by local laws. These sights may be viewed but are forbidden to touch.

Further out are state forests in Campbell’s Island, in Cuttwell, and in Whymoul.

Historical buildings in Barham include the Royal Hotel, situated on Thule Street, and the National Bank building which is located on Murray Street. The former was constructed in 1904, while the later was built circa 1912.

Interested individuals can also pay a visit to the Bonum Sawmill, along Moulamein Road, to see the inner workings processing red gum logs to lumber.

Also along Moulamein Road is the Barham Golf and Country Club, a popular leisure destination for both visitors and locals. The golf course also incorporates bowling greens and several lawn tennis courts, making it a haven for sport lovers.

Every October, the town comes alive with the Barham-Koondrook Show, which showcases local produce and crafts.

Visitors to the town will have plenty of options for accommodations. There’s the Barham Hotel located on Murray Street, the Country Roads Motor Inn in Thule Street, the Riverview on the Edward Bed & Breakfast on Balpool Road, and the Barham Lakes Murrayview Caravan Park on East Barham Road. The town’s golf club also offers its own accommodations for those wishing to stay near the putting green.
