The heritage of the area is quiet noticeable. Thirroul’s national voters are known as the Division of Cunningham with their constituent Sharon Bid. But to New South Wales, they are known as the Electoral District of Keira with David Andrew as their constituent.

The town’s major commercial center is located near north of Bulli Pass. This is where Princess Highway divides to establish Lawrence Hargrave Drive. The drive leads to Thirroul Station on South Coast Line. Then it will lead to a bridge passing the major center until Anita’s Theater. Anita’s Theater is an establishment that had undergone extensive renovations during 2006 until 2007.

Thirroul is continuously increasing in population. There are several stores that are added constantly. Various cafes are present in the major commercial center, which boosts the fame of the seaside town. On the other hand, Beaches Hotel is located on the main highway. Thirroul also holds several shops, as well as the major shopping spot for northern suburbs of Wollongong.

Thirroul Beach possesses an outstanding character. It has a 400-meter elevated escarpment, enticing most bushwalkers to northern Austimer and the surfers of the beaches. Thirroul beach is well-known for both locals and tourists. The beach is full packed during summer seasons and long weekends. The beach ranges up to 1 kilometer, complete with a huge and grassy reserve. The area is safeguarded during summer days. You will also find a 50-meter ocean pool near the beach.
Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club was founded in 1907, being one of the 14 organizations in New South Wales. Ex-iron Men champions Dean and Darren Mercer came from Thirroul. Their parents are residents of the town.

Thirroul is a bare beach, having reef breaks. This is a great spot for surfing. The most sought-after wind for Thirroul surfing is the offshore winds coming from west-north-west. Most of the waves in Thirroul come from the groundswells. The best groundswells come from southeast. The reef breaks are suitable for left- and right-handed surfers. Caution should be remembered as there are several ruptures, rocks, and appearance of sharks in the beach.

The development of Sandon Point Stockland has given rise to a lot of arguments and issues among environmentalists, developers, and aboriginal groups. Indigenous people over aboriginal heritage, coastal marshland, and floodplain are affected since 1989. Their complaint is still present. There was also 24/7 protest that has been going on for 5 years prior to the arson assault.
