Gerringong is a municipality approximately 10 minutes towards south of Kiama in Illarawa district of NSW, Australia. There is a conjecture that tells that the name was derived from an indigenous term meaning “fearful place”. Evidently, immense fear was caused to ethnic groups in that area by seeing Captain Cook’s vessel sailing. There are other conjectures relating to the meaning of the town’s name.
