Newcastle, Hunter Region — New South Wales

The metropolitan area of Newcastle is located in the central eastern coast of New South Wales, about 2 hours north of Sydney. It is located on the mouth of the Hunter Region and is known to be rich in history and natural attractions.

On the eastern part of Newcastle, there are several interesting and often historic places to visit and explore. One is the fully restored former Newcastle East Police Station, located on the corner of Scott and Pacific Streets and constructed on 1880.

Those interested in visiting some of the historic buildings of Newcastle should also head out to Cooks Hill, a suburb where Victorian-style houses are situated along its tree-lined streets. St. John’s Anglican Church, considered the oldest in Newcastle, is situated on the corner of Dawsons and Parry Streets and was constructed in 1859. Along Union Street is Leslieville, a beautiful house with an equally beautiful garden built circa 1880.

Striking Victorian terrace houses are also found along Tyrrell Street, while on Barker Street is the impressive Shalamah mansion.

Another notable residence is located along Ordnance Street, the Jesmond House. Constructed in 1870, this abode is quite impressive both in exterior and interior, with spectacular staircase and cast-iron fencing.

Anyone interested in visiting the oldest known building in Newcastle should head to Bolton Street to check out the Rose Cottage, built in 1828.

One of Newcastle’s most prominent buildings would be the Customs House, built in 1877 and featuring a clock tower. A group of structures constructed in just about the same time is the Newcastle Railway Station, composed of five buildings built right next to each other.

Those who would like to enjoy Newcastle’s natural attractions should pay a visit to Shortland Wetlands Centre, with its entrance located along Sandgate Road. Activities here include hiking, biking, picnics, and canoeing.

Further beyond Newcastle but still worth a visit is Mount Sugarloaf Lookout, which affords spectacular views of the rest of Lower Hunter Valley.

There are also several choices of destinations for beach lovers in the area. Newcastle Beach is a favorite swimming and surfing spot, where the annual Energy Australia Surfest Competition is held. Other options include the Dixon Beach, the Burwood Beach, the Dudley Beach, and the Redhead Beach. Another popular, if unique, swimming destination is the Newcastle Ocean Baths, accessed through Shortland Esplanade and a favorite destination for families since 1918.

Art lovers can also visit the gallery of the Aboriginal Artists of Australia, located along Hunter Street, and the Studio 48 Art Gallery on Mackie Avenue. The Newcastle Regional Museum, also located on Hunter Street, showcases items related to the area’s industrial past.

The area comes alive several times in a year for community events and festivals. There’s the Newcastle Maritime Festival in January, the Newcastle Longboard Pro Am in February, the Beaumont Street Jazz and Arts Festival in April, and the Newcastle Jazz Festival and the Newcastle Cathedral Flower Festival  held in August. Every October, there’s the Mattara Hill Climb in King Edward Park, while December events include the King Street Fair and the Carols By Candlelight.
