East Maitland is a suburb of Maitland, a city on the eastern part of New South Wales. Being the near the coast, East Maitland enjoys hot summer and mild winter seasons, suitable for spending vacations and holidays in. This area has enjoyed significant progress in the last century, with the influx of residents and business establishments. However, East Maitland still retained most of its legacies from the past, especially in the maintenance of its historic structures.
Examples of which would be the structures along Newcastle Street that were built by businessman John Smith early in the 19th century. These structures were believed to have been used once as inns. Located on Mill Street is the Caroline Chisholm Cottage that was once used as immigrants’ home and later on as a hospital. Along Melbourne Street is the beautiful Bank of Australasia building that was built in 1882. Down the street is the old George and Dragon Inn that is now a restaurant, and nearby is the Farmer Hotel.
On William Street is the Gothic style St. Peters Anglican Parish, used since 1886. The church is truly a fine piece of architecture, beautiful both in exterior and interior. It is also a favorite wedding venue in the city, and visitors visit the grounds for leisurely strolls.
Another popular tourist destination is the Maitland Gaol, located on John Street. After more than 150 years of use as prison of hardened criminals, it has become a historic treasure of the city. Tours are offered within the facility and interested individuals can stay the night for a glimpse of what life within its walls was like in years past.
At the end of William Street is the Stockade Hill Heritage Park, where the first schoolhouse was built. In present times, the park is a favorite spot to relax and unwind in, and there are plenty of opportunities for bicycling and jogging.
Along Banks Street are several noteworthy structures, including the Literary Institute, Eckford's Cottage, Hew Cottage, and a Georgian mansion. All these structures were built during the 19th century and thanks to meticulous maintenance, still serve as testaments to the town’s rich history.
Visitors who are impressed with huge, old buildings should also visit 'Goonoobah,' located on King Street. It was built for a rich businessman George Furber in 1841. Another interesting structure close by is the ‘Roseneath’ building that was originally intended to be a Victorian inn. The name came from the rose garden that was established as an addition to this eye-pleasing structure.
Most of the structures mentioned above are included in the East Maitland Heritage Walk. This guided tour is offered by the Maitland Visitors Information Centre, located at the corner of New England Highway and Banks Street.
For those seeking a more modern means of passing one’s time, there’s always shopping. The Stockland Green Hills is known as East Maitland’s shopping center, with a lot of stores and boutiques fulfilling most of the area’s shopping needs. Located in Molly Morgan Drive, it is a favorite destination of families from around the area and the city in general.
