Hunter Region, New South Wales

The Hunter Region of New South Wales is located in the eastern part of the state, north of Sydney. Read more...

The Hunter River and its tributaries run through this region, providing ample water supply to its dominant wine and coal mining industries.

The Hunter Region has several Aboriginal attractions. On Hillsdale Orange Orchard, along Thompson Road in Bulga, are several Aboriginal tools displayed in its main homestead. Amenities for bushwalking and overnight accommodations are also available. In Newcastle, there's the art gallery of the Aboriginal Artists of Australia. Located on Hunter Street, this attraction showcases and sells several artworks made by indigenous artists.

There are numerous parks and gardens within the region, providing plenty of opportunities for recreation and relaxation to both locals and visitors alike. Wallalong House, set in its own garden, is historically relevant both to the town of Mallalong and the region in particular. Located on Morpeth Street, this structure was constructed by pioneer Walter Scott in 1841. Another beautiful destination is the Lake Glenbawn State Park, in the town of Scone. Apart from the lake, the park also features the Museum of Rural Life, park shelters, picnic sites, and several accommodations. Another attraction well worth a visit is the Walka Recreation and Wildlife Reserve, located along Scobies Lane in Oakhampton. This area is listed under the National Trust, and has the pump house as its most prominent feature. The reserve is also a popular spot for picnics and several water-based recreations. For those wanting some peace and serenity, the Sacred Spaces is their ideal destination. This convent is the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy, and is also a sight to behold architecturally. The area, located along Queen Street in Singleton, is also a popular venue for weddings.

Hunter Region also possesses a rich heritage, manifested in historic homes and buildings in its towns and cities. The Convict Lumberyard, located on Scott Street in Newcastle, was operational from 1805 until 1851, and, at present times, is open for educational and historic tours. The Singleton Historical Museum was originally a courthouse and a jail later on, during the pioneering days of the town. This museum now houses collections of memorabilia and is located in Burdekin Park. The Fort Scratchley Military Museum is situation in a historic site in Newcastle. Convict coalmines established in 1799 used to stand in the site, and was transformed into a maritime signaling station in the early years of the 19th century. Visitors in the town of Morpeth should take time to drop by the Morpeth Trading Post, the oldest structure still operational up to the present times in New South Wales. Located along Robert Street, this vast historic structure still sells numerous collectible items like toys, coins, and antiques.

And just because the Hunter Region is a predominantly rural town does not mean that shopping enthusiasts will not get to do this urban activity. Maitland Markets, in particular, contained more than 600 stalls and showcase locally made products. Held every first Sunday of the month on Blomfield Street, it is a destination that's definitely not to be missed.

A large tourist draw-card for the Hunter Region is the Hunter Valley a.k.a "Wine Country" which is an area covering many suburbs including Cessnock, Pokolbin and Lovedale. The Hunter Valley has many tours and attractions which include wine tasting tours, and overnight experiences.
