New South Wales, Australia

New South Wales is a state of Australia located in its southeastern part. The place-name was given by the famed explorer Captain James Cook.

Considered as the most populous state of the country, much of NSW depends on exportation of coal, information technology, and financial services as its main industries. Read more...

However, the state is also blessed with lots of natural and man-made attractions that consequently made tourism a major profit earner for both the state and individual entrepreneurs.

The coastal parts of New South Wales boast of numerous beautiful beaches catering to locals and visitors desire to enjoy the sun and surf. Examples would be the Aslings Beach in Eden, the Bennetts Beach in Hawks Nest, the Copacabana Beach, and the One Mile Beach in Forster. Most of the beaches in the state are ideal surfing spots, while whale watching is quite popular during the months of June to November. During the rest of the year, however, New South Welshmen and visitors flock to the beaches to swim, go sailing, snorkel, scuba dive, and engage in numerous types of water sports.

New South Wales is also replete with national parks and forest reserves that offer ample opportunities to commune with nature. The Nymboida National Park, for one, is a popular destination for white-water rafting. The Blue Mountains National Park, a World Heritage site located in Blackheath, is perfect for bushwalking and camping while the Cranky Rock Nature Reserve in Warialda features some unique rock formations that serve as backdrop for its picnic site. All the national parks and forested areas in NSW have several lookout points that afford spectacular views of surrounding landscapes. Lots of visitors take the time and effort to follow walking trails just to reach these lookouts and have memorable outdoor experiences along the way. The abundance of birds and other animals also make these walks interesting.

A visit to New South Wales wouldn't be complete without stopovers in several of its Aboriginal sites. The Bora Ring in Ballina is a well preserved site that tells present people something about the ways of the Nyangabal people. The Aboriginal Rock Carvings in Casino are also interesting sights that are worth a visit or two. Also worth visiting is the Jedda Boomerangs, an establishment in Dubbo that makes these sporting implements out of high quality wood. Visitors not only get to buy some, techniques for throwing them are also freely dispensed. Those keen on how the Aboriginals live before European settlers came to Australia should visit several cultural centers found within the state. There are also numerous art galleries that showcase the works of local artists.

Those interested in catching glimpses of animals native to the area and country should also stop by several wildlife reserves and zoos. At the Narrandera Koala Regeneration Reserve, local guides will teach visitors the art of koala spotting and provide opportunities for viewing these marsupials. At the Dingo Sanctuary in Sydney, visitors learn about them through educational displays and presentations and are allowed to go near these canines, something that they could never experience in the wild. At the Sydney Aquarium, tropical marine creatures take center stage. In fact, the aquarium is one of the most popular attractions in the area and is inundated with visitors practically every day of the year.

Several tourist attractions are also located in New South Wales and are popular destinations of holiday makers and their families. Such is the Ton O Fun Family Fun Park in Failford, which features several rides for children and sporting facilities to its older patrons. Then there's the Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah, where visitors not only get to enjoy rides and familiarize themselves with different kinds of topical fruits. Opportunities for sampling and tasting them are also offered.

And for those interested in history, a lot of towns and cities in New South Wales offer guided walking tours that lead to historic buildings and homes located in their area, structures that serve as witnesses to the growth and development not only of the locality but of the whole state as well.
