Orange

Photo Gallery Photo Gallery

Orange is a city in New South Wales, located in the central eastern part of the state. The place-name was attributed to Prince William of Orange, a monarch in the Netherlands.

Due to its altitude, the city is known to experience significant snowfall during winters. The rest of the year, however, Orange enjoys an agreeable climate, with not so hot summers and cool autumns and springs, an added plus to anyone wishing to drop by and explore this inland city.

The city boasts of several parks within its boundaries. Cook Park, along Summer Street, boasts of spectacular scenery during early autumn, with its numerous European trees that were planted more than a century ago. Picnics and strolls are conducted under their shades, while children can explore the aviary and the pond located within the premises. Other interesting features include the John Gale Memorial Fountain and the octagonal-shaped bandstand.

Visitors will also enjoy exploring through the Botanical Garden, located on Kearneys Drive. The gardens are designed around several themes and the area is a favorite venue for concerts and music performances during summer. Nearby is the Orange Adventure Playground, where children can run and play to their hearts' content.

On Warrendine Street is another recreation destination, the Moulder Park, which is actually a series of parks crossing several streets. The area also contains a small creek, where ducks can be found swimming and wading in its surface. Picnics are done beneath the shade of poplar trees, which is also makes the area perfect for a short jog or walk.

The Robertson Park, located on Byng Street, has the Whitney fountain as its most prominent feature. It is also an ideal spot for picnics, under numerous trees planted in the area.

Avid nature lovers should also visit Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano located west of the city and is a perfect spot for bird watching and animal viewing. Nearby is the man-made Lake Canobolas, ideal for picnics, barbecues, and water sports.

When visitors get to participate in the Orange City Heritage Trail, they get to tour several historic buildings devotedly maintained by the locals up to the present times. Along Byng Street is the Orange Court House, a Neo-Classical structure constructed in 1883. At the corner of Anson Street, there's the Trinity Church, designed in High Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style and is a popular landmark of the area.

Another historic religious structure located along Byng Street is the St. Joseph Church, completed in the later part of the 19th century.

The areas surrounding Orange is cultivated by several wineries. Some of the wineries worth visiting would be the Brangayne vineyard on Pinnacle Road, the Gold Dust Wines on Forest Road, Ibis Wines near the Botanic Gardens, and Osmond Wines on Cargo Road.

Visitors to Orange shouldn't leave without paying a visit to the Ophir Reserve, where tours in some gold mines can be conducted. The area is also a popular picnic and camping destination.

For those preferring a more urban kind of recreation, there's always shopping within the city's two shopping centers, as well as a round or two of golf at several of the well-maintained country clubs in the area.
